Give it up

Giving it up is good for your soul. Hindus go in for renunciation. Christians give it up for Lent. Muslims have the holy month of Ramadan, Jews have Yom Kippur (a fast lasts about 25 hours).

But here’s another take on the idea of giving up. There must be things you could give up that would make only a tiny difference to your life. By using the time or money you save, you could make a big difference to the world. Here are some ideas for what to give up:

  • Give up drinking bottled water.Bring your own water bottle. As it doesn’t involve trucks thundering down highways to bring it to you, or empty bottles to dispose of.
  • Give up purchasing a cup of coffee on the way to the office each morning. Bring it in a thermos flask instead, and save 300 disposable cups and heaps of money a year!
  • Give up smoking. This is the single most sensible thing you can do for a healthier life. And it will make a huge difference to your finances.
  • Give up deodorant, and smell like yourself rather than a perfume factory (and save the world from volatile organic compounds).
  • Be alcohol-free at least one day a week.
  • If you have old or unwanted items that are still in good condition, consider giving them to someone or donating them to charity. Click here for more information.

Give it up. And do it !

“Together we can change the world. Through the way we live, the adjustments we make in our lives, and the action we take on issues that really concern us, we can begin to make a difference.”

~ Michael Norton, 2006.
